Boling is identified in the narrative as a destination where Cao Ren and a small group of survivors hope to find a ford after fleeing the Bai River. Their attempt to escape is interrupted by Zhang Fei, making the place a point on a threatened retreat rather than a secure refuge.

A waypoint on the retreat

After the attack at the Bai River, only a few men escape with Cao Ren. They turn toward Boling because they know a ford lies there, offering a possible route across the river. The detail gives the retreat a practical objective: the survivors are not simply fleeing, but trying to reach a known crossing.

Zhang Fei’s interception

Before the group reaches safety, Zhang Fei rises up before them and confronts Cao Ren. The narrative leaves the immediate outcome unresolved at this point, emphasizing the danger still facing the survivors. Boling’s significance in the episode comes from its place in that narrowing escape route: the ford promises passage, while Zhang Fei’s arrival blocks the way.
